What are Braces, Anyways?

Great question! After all, there are many kinds of orthodontic treatment, of which braces are only one. And there are multiple forms of braces.

Braces are the original form of orthodontic treatment. Forms of braces go back hundreds, even thousands of years: researchers have even found Egyptian mummies with what appear to be rudimentary braces on their teeth! Over the years, the orthodontic community has perfected braces treatment to make it easy, comfortable, and extremely effective.

Our Melrose office has various forms of braces for you to choose from. Metal braces, also referred to as traditional braces, use metal brackets connected by a wire. These are held in place by small rubber bands, which come in many different colors. Choosing band colors is a fun part of your braces experience, especially for younger patients! Consider matching your braces to your favorite sports team, holiday-themed, or to accessorize with a special outfit.

Metal braces are extremely durable and tend to lead to a faster treatment schedule. They can be a good choice for younger patients, or those with an active lifestyle since these braces are unlikely to be damaged.

Ceramic braces are also affixed to the teeth and connected by a band, but the brackets are tooth-colored, diminishing the appearance of these braces. They can be an attractive option for adults or older adolescents, but because they are more difficult to care for, are not always a good choice for younger patients.

Another option available at the Diamond Braces Bronx practice is lingual braces. Lingual braces are affixed behind the teeth, and straighten them from behind. This is a less common treatment as it only works in specific cases, but you should ask your orthodontist if this treatment can work for you!
